Stack's Bowers April 2021 Hong Kong sale, lot 51256
SB421-51256r.jpg

This specimen was lot 51256 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $5,520. The catalog description[1] noted,

"MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1850-Pi MC. San Luis Potosí Mint. NGC MS-65★. Pop: 1, none graded finer by NGC, and none evaluated in mint state by PCGS. A lustrous coin with beautiful multicolor toning on the cap side. The cap is decently struck though much of the eagle has been polished away. Our first offering of this date since March 2011 (Ponterio sale 159, lot 8762). We are offering another in this sale but it is from different dies."

This eight reales is one of a series struck 1827-93 at the San Luis Potosí mint. This date is rather scarce, verging on rare. Assayer MC is recorded for 1849-60.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.12; DP-Pi29.
