Mexico 1850-Do JMR 8 escudos

Heritage sale 3035, lot 31249

This specimen was lot 31249 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $3,290. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1850 Do-JMR AU58 NGC, Durango mint. Borderline Mint State with only slight friction evidence on the highest points with significant mint luster remaining. Very scarce on this grade, this piece currently being the 2nd highest graded specimen by NGC. From The Law Collection." The Durango mint struck eight escudos 1832-70 and is one of the abundant mints tho less so than Culiacan or Guanajuato; many dates are common. The eagle is distinctive to Durango and can be found on all the silver and gold denominations.
