Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 73042

This specimen was lot 73042 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $1,586. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1831-Ga LP. Guadalajara Mint. NGC Fine Details--Scratches. Extremely rare date and one year assayer. This date as unknown to Buttrey and Hubbard in their first edition. Only example graded by NGC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." The Guadalajara mint produced two reales nearly continuously 1825-62 but the 1831-G^A seems to be very rare, perhaps unique. Assayer LP served 1829-31. Other mints include Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Alamos, Hermosillo, Mexico City, Culiacan, Chihuahua, Durango, Potosi, Estado de Mexico, Real de Catorce and Guadalupe y Calvo. Only Oaxaca did not strike this type. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-374.6 (date not listed).
