from the Stack's Bowers 2024 ANA sale, lot 41260
SB824-41260r.jpg

This specimen is from a type struck 1829-37 and is fairly available. It superseded a shortlived type that weighed 14 g (KM 357). This issue was accompanied by copper octavos; both were issued in an attempt to drive out the abusive minting of state and municipal coppers. The "JM" counterstamp is noted in Bailey[2] as a hacienda mark, yet it is common enough that the SCWC mentions it and assigns it a catalog number (noted below). The second specimen was lot 41260 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $125. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/4 Real, 1831-Mo. Mexico City Mint. NGC AU-53. A well-preserved example of the type, featuring wholesome glossy brown surfaces and a rather clear strike. From the EMO Collection."

Specification: copper, 7 g, 27 mm diameter.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Catalog reference: KM-358a.1 (with counterstamp).
