This specimen was lot 8076 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $11,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Mexico City. 1/8 Real, 1829. Exceptional Quality 1/8 Real 1829 One of the finest known of this very rare type. Slightly weak strike, minor planchet flaws, red and brown. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." This specimen is the scarcer of two types of copper octavos known for 1829; this one, the large type, is known only for 1829; the small (KM 333) was struck 1829-35 and is fairly available. This issue was accompanied by copper cuartillas; both were issued in an attempt to drive out the abusive minting of state and municipal coppers.

Specification: copper, 3.5 g, 21 mm diameter (small); copper 7 g, 27 mm diameter (large).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Catalog reference: KM-332.
