Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 546

The first specimen was lot 11013 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $705. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Escudos, 1829-GoMJ. Cleaned. VERY FINE." The second specimen was lot 546 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £1,200 (about US$1,859 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic, 4 escudos, Guanajuato mint, 1829 JM, virtually mint state, lightly toned. Ex Bob Briggs, October 1984." Guanajuato is the most available mint for this scarce denomination.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.875 fine gold, .381 troy oz AGW.
