The first specimen was lot 8077 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $2,300. The catalog description[1] noted, “MEXICO. Mexico City. 1/4 Real, 1829. Rare in this high grade. Nice strike, a few light scratches on the reverse, red and brown. UNCIRCULATED." This specimen is the scarcer of two types of copper cuartillas known for 1829; this one, the large type, is known only for 1829; the small (KM 358) was struck 1829-37 and is fairly available. This issue was accompanied by copper octavos; both were issued in an attempt to drive out the abusive minting of state and municipal coppers.

Specification: copper, 7 g, 27 mm diameter (small); copper 14 g, 33 mm diameter (large).
