This specimen was lot 73112 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $1,220. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1829/8-Mo JM. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-64. Scarce overdate. Finest of just two examples graded by NGC. Soft on eagle with frosty luster and light toning. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." This is one of a type struck at the Mexico City mint 1825-37, 1840-41, 1847-63, 1867-68. Assayer JM is listed for 1822-32. This date is fairly common and the overdate is awarded no premium. Other mints include Potosi, Guanajuato, Alamos, Hermosillo, Guadalajara, Culiacan, Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Estado de Mexico, Real de Catorce and Guadalupe y Calvo. Only Oaxaca did not strike this type. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated.
