This specimen was lot 25138 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $881.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 2 Reales 1828 Mo-JM, MS64 PCGS, very rare quality with an intricate strike and sporadic variegated tone that leaves pockets of flashy silver." This type was struck at the Mexico City mint 1825-68. Assayer JM is recorded this mint for the years 1824-32. Other mints include Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Alamos, Hermosillo, Guadalajara, Culiacan, Chihuahua, Durango, Potosi, Estado de Mexico, Real de Catorce and Guadalupe y Calvo. Only Oaxaca did not strike this type. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated. This is a common date of a common mint but rare in choice condition.
