San Luis Potosi 1828 medal Grove-75a
The first specimen was lot 34734 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico: San Luis Potosi silver 'Los Héroes de la Patria' Medal 1828 MS64 PCGS. Finely detailed and bathed in frosty silver color, the fields evincing only the lightest signs of handling far from preventing that near-Gem level of certification. The few scratches that may at first appear to be on the coin are actually on the face of the holder, while the light silhouette of the dentils between the words MEXICO and LIBRE, and the corresponding place on the reverse, suggests some light double striking." The second specimen was lot 72262 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. San Luis Potosi. Heroes of the Homeland Silver Proclamation Medal, 1828. PCGS VF-35. Obverse: Female personification of Mexico seated facing, head lowered left, holding phrygian cap on pole and key; cactus to left, cornucopia to right; Reverse: Legend in six lines; above, arrow and key crossed in saltire; star below. Fairly well handled, but nevertheless pleasingly toned and without issue. From the David Sterling Collection." We have made little attempt to include medals on this site but we have featured this one as it is the direct antecedent of the copper coinage of this state, in quarter reales and eighth reales.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, 29 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: Grove-75A; Fonrobert-6967.
