This specimen was lot 73074 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $292.80. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1828-Go JM. Guanajuato Mint. NGC VG-8. Very scarce. Finest of just two examples graded by NGC. Rare assayer. Probably transposed letters for assayer "MJ". From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." This denomination was struck at Guanajuato 1825-63 and 1867-68. Three different assayers stamped two reales at Guanajuato in 1828: MR (1827-28, somewhat scarce), JM (1828 and 1833 only, shown here, common) and MJ (1826-33, common). Other mints include Potosi, Mexico City, Alamos, Hermosillo, Guadalajara, Culiacan, Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Estado de Mexico, Real de Catorce and Guadalupe y Calvo. Only Oaxaca did not strike this type. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated.
