Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 72344

This specimen was lot 72344 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $129. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1828-Go MJ. Guanajuato Mint. NGC VF-35. Variety with full 'J' and large '8'. Second finest of just three graded. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." This denomination was struck at Guanajuato 1826-62 and 1867-68. Two different assayers stamped two reales at Guanajuato in 1828: MR (1827-28) and MJ (1826-33, shown here). Varieties include 1828/6-MR/JJ, 1828/7-MR, 1828-G MR/JJ and 1828-MJ full "J" and straight "J". Others may exist not mentioned in the SCWC, which doesn't award a premium to any. Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca and Real de Catorce did not strike this type. Unlike the half reales, which appear occasionally in gem condition, this denomination nearly always comes heavily circulated.
