This specimen was part of lot 73099 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), which sold for $512.40. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Octet of 2 Reales (8 Pieces), 1826-31. Guanajuato Mint. Average Grade: VERY GOOD. 1) 1826-Go JJ. 2) 1826-Go MJ. 3) 1827/6-Go MJ. 4) 1827-Go MJ. 5) 1828/7-Go MR. 6) 1828-Go MJ. 7) 1831-Go MJ. No dot after "MEXICANA". 8) 1831-Go MJ. Dot after "MEXICANA". From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." This denomination was struck at Guanajuato 1825-63 and 1867-68. Three different assayers stamped two reales at Guanajuato in 1828: MR (1827-28, shown here, somewhat scarce), JM (1828 and 1833 only, common) and MJ (1826-33, common). All of assayer MR's products seem to be the 1828/7 overdate. Other mints include Potosi, Mexico City, Alamos, Hermosillo, Guadalajara, Culiacan, Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Estado de Mexico, Real de Catorce and Guadalupe y Calvo. Only Oaxaca did not strike this type. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated.
