Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 72244

This specimen was lot 72244 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $244. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1828/7-Z AO. Zacatecas Mint. NGC Unc Details--Obverse Scratched. Tied for highest of four examples graded by NGC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Zacatecas and Guanajuato were the two mints that made a serious effort to produce minor coinage for local use; the other mints preferred to concentrate on striking eight reales for export. Zacatecas half reales are known for 1826-63 and 1869 and this is a common date. Assayer AO served 1826-29. No regular date is listed in the SCWC. Most of the early half reales have a simple "Z" mintmark.
