Mexico 1831-Do RM 8 reales

from the Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 7769

This specimen was lot 7769 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $384. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1831-Do RM. Durango Mint. NGC AU-50. A wholesome and medium gray toned coin, with no distracting marks and good detail throughout." The Durango mint struck eight reales 1824-95 and this early date is one of the first readily available dates. This specimen shows a "B" stamped on the eagle's claw. Supposedly the mintmaster added his initial to distinguish those made from debased silver, which debasement was done at the orders of a shortlived rebel movement.
