This specimen was lot 30397 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "Cuba, Republic gold Proof "Bartolome de las Casas" 100 Pesos 1992 PR70 Ultra Cameo NGC. Struck as part of the "500th Anniversary - Discovery of America" series. A rare type and at the highest possible grade level. From the El Don Diego Luna Collection." The year 1992 saw the release of many NCLT's by the regime featuring the 500th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America. Greeted by disinterest from the world at large, many are now rare. Bartolomé de las Casas, 1484?–1566, was a 16th-century Spanish colonist who acted as a historian and social reformer before becoming a Dominican friar. He was appointed as the first resident Bishop of Chiapas, and the first officially appointed "Protector of the Indians". His extensive writings, the most famous being A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies and Historia de Las Indias, chronicle the first decades of colonization of the West Indies. He described the atrocities committed by the colonizers against the indigenous peoples and advocated that Negro slaves be substituted for Indian labor.
