This specimen was lot 30389 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "Cuba, Republic gold Proof "Diego Velazquez" 100 Pesos 1991 PR70 Ultra Cameo NGC, New World 500th Anniversary Series. From the El Don Diego Luna Collection." The second specimen was lot 33422 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $2,400. The lot description[2] noted, "Cuba. Republic gold Proof 'Diego Velázquez' 100 Pesos (1 oz) 1991 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC, Havana mint. Struck as part of the '500th Anniversary - Discovery of America' series to celebrate Diego Velazquez de Cuéllar, first governor of Cuba. Confident in its Gem flash and precision." The year 1991 saw the release of many NCLT's by the regime featuring the 500th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America. Greeted by disinterest from the world at large, many are now rare. We are baffled as to why painter Diego Velazquez, who lived a century after these events, was included.
