Aureo sale 269, lot 637

This specimen was lot 637 in Aureo sale 269 (Barcelona, July 2015), where it sold for €860 (about US$1,111 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"* 1991. Cuba. 50 pesos. AU. V Centenario - Juana la Loca. Acuñación de 200 ejemplares. Proof. (Cuba, gold fifty pesos of 1991, for the fifth centennial of Juana la Loca; mintage of 200 pieces, proof.)"

This type is listed in the SCWC but without a photo. Desperate for foreign exchange, Cuba has issued large numbers of NCLT's, many only vaguely related to Cuba. This type was accompanied by a gold hundred pesos (Fr-61).

Recorded mintage: 200, all proof.

Specification: 15.55 g, 0.999 fine gold, this specimen 15,53 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-62, KM 444.
