This specimen was lot 30387 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $2,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "Cuba, Republic gold Proof "Queen Joanna" 100 Pesos 1991 PR70 Ultra Cameo NGC. "500th Anniversary of the New World" series. A technically perfect coin. From the El Don Diego Luna Collection." The year 1991 saw the release of many NCLT's by the regime featuring the 500th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America. Greeted by disinterest from the world at large, many are now rare. Joanna, nicknamed "the Mad", was queen of Castile 1504-55 but was placed under regency for her entire reign, first by her father, Ferdinand of Aragon, then by her son, emperor Charles V.
