Cuba 1990 100 pesos Fr-20
This specimen was lot 1187 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "CUBA, Havana mint, gold proof piefort 100 pesos, 1990, José Martí, NGC PF 68 Ultra Cameo (EMO Collection Label). Nearly perfect, just a couple faint bumps on the frosted bust, impressively thick and heavy, from a reported mintage of just 12 pieces. Pedigreed to The Emilio M. Ortiz Collection of Cuban Gold Coins." Martí, best known as the author of "Guantanamera", has been adopted as a hero of the Cuban revolution, tho it seems unlikely that he would have much sympathy with the Communists. The bust used here originally appeared on the Cuban gold issues of 1915-16, minted in Philadelphia. This design was also used in 1988 and 1989. Other 100 pesos for 1990 included KM 302, KM 303, KM 304 and KM 305 plus pieforts.
Recorded mintage: 15 plus 12 proofs plus an unknown number of pieforts, perhaps 12.
Specification: 31.103 g, 0.999 fine gold, 1.000 troy oz AGW; piefort: 2 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: KM 215; Fr-20; piefort: KM-P51.
