Sincona sale 69, lot 788

The first specimen was lot 796 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "Cuba, gold proof 10 pesos, 1990, XXV Summer Olympic Games, Barcelona 1992 - Basketball, PCGS PR67DCAM. Choice mirrored fields, no discernible flaws (scratches in plastic slab on reverse side), 1/10 oz of 0.999 gold." The second specimen was lot 788 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,

"CUBA | Republik, 10 Pesos 1990, Havana. Olympiade - Basketball. Nur 5'000 Exemplare geprägt. (republic of Cuba, ten pesos of 1990, Havana mint, for Olympic basketball. Only 5'000 pieces struck. NGC PF68 ULTRA CAMEO.)"

Desperate for foreign exchange, Cuba has issued large numbers of NCLT's, many only vaguely related to Cuba. For the Barcelona Olympics, the regime issued NCLT's honoring basketball, baseball, high jump and volleyball.

Reported Mintage: est. 5,000.

Specification: 3.11 g, 0.999 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-56, KM-342.
