Aureo sale 269, lot 628

This specimen was lot 628 in Aureo sale 269 (Barcelona, July 2015), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,067 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"* 1990. Cuba. 50 pesos. AU. Simón Bolivar. Acuñación de 50 ejemplares. Muy rara. Proof. (Cuba, gold fifty pesos of 1990, for Simon Bolivar, 50 pieces minted, very rare, proof.)"

This type is listed in the SCWC but without a photo. Desperate for foreign exchange, Cuba has issued large numbers of NCLT's, many only vaguely related to Cuba. Bolivar has been adopted as a hero of the Cuban revolution, tho it seems unlikely as a slave-owning landowner, that he would have much sympathy with the Communists.

Recorded mintage: 15, all proof.

Specification: 15.55 g, 0.999 fine gold, this specimen 15,51 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-44, KM 281.
