Sedwick Treasure Auction 36, lot 1175
Sed36-1175r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1175 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "CUBA, Havana mint, gold proof 25 pesos, 1989, José Martí, NGC PF 68 Ultra Cameo (EMO Collection Label). Choice mirroring and cameo effect with minimal tiny blemishes, from a reported mintage of just 15 pieces. Pedigreed to The Emilio M. Ortiz Collection of Cuban Gold Coins." Martí, best known as the author of "Guantanamera", has been adopted as a hero of the Cuban revolution, tho it seems unlikely that he would have much sympathy with the Communists. The bust used here originally appeared on the Cuban gold issues of 1915-16, minted in Philadelphia. This design was also used in 1988 and 1990.

Recorded mintage: 50 plus 15 proofs.

Specification: 7.77 g, 0.999 fine gold, 0.250 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 213; Fr-22.
