Sedwick Treasure Auction 36, lot 1191

This specimen was lot 1191 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description^[1] noted, "CUBA, Havana mint, gold piefort 15 pesos, 1990, José Martí, NGC MS 69 (EMO Collection Label). Frosted finish, very near perfection, from a reported mintage of just 12 pieces. Pedigreed to The Emilio M. Ortiz Collection of Cuban Gold Coins." Martí, best known as the author of "Guantanamera", has been adopted as a hero of the Cuban revolution, tho it seems unlikely that he would have much sympathy with the Communists. The bust used here originally appeared on the Cuban gold issues of 1915-16, minted in Philadelphia. This design was also used in 1988 and 1989.

Recorded mintage: 15 plus 12 proofs plus an unknown number of pieforts, perhaps 12.

Specification: 3.88 g, 0.999 fine gold, 0.125 troy oz AGW; piefort: 0.25 troy oz AGW.
