Cuba H3082-33618r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 638 in Aureo sale 269 (Barcelona, July 2015), where it sold for €810 (about US$1,047 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"* 1991. Cuba. 50 pesos. AU. V Centenario - Diego Velázquez. Con certificado. Acuñación de 200 ejemplares. Proof. (Cuba, gold fifty pesos of 1991, for the fifth centennial of Diego Velazquez; mintage of 200 pieces, proof.)"

The second specimen was lot 33618 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $990. The catalog description[2] noted, "Cuba: Republic gold Proof "Diego Velazquez - New World 500th Anniversary" 50 Pesos 1991 PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC. From the El Don Diego Luna Collection." This type is listed in the SCWC but without a photo. Desperate for foreign exchange, Cuba has issued large numbers of NCLT's, many only vaguely related to Cuba. This type was accompanied by a silver fifty pesos and a gold hundred pesos (Fr-63).

Recorded mintage: 200, all proof.

Specification: 15.55 g, 0.999 fine gold, this specimen 15,53 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-64, KM 445.
