This specimen was lot 33617 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $990. The catalog description[1] noted, "Cuba: Republic gold Proof "Hatuey Tribesman" 50 Pesos 1991 PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC. From the New World 500th anniversary series. From the El Don Diego Luna Collection." The year 1991 saw the release of many NCLT's by the regime featuring the 500th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America. Greeted by disinterest from the world at large, many are now rare. Hatuey was a Taino cacique who died in 1512, resisting the Spanish. This design was also used on a silver fifty pesos (KM 435) and a gold hundred pesos (KM 450).
