Cuba H3081-30404r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30404 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "Cuba, Republic gold Proof "Cuba Anniversary" 100 Pesos 1993 PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC. An apparently unlisted and presumably very low mintage type, struck to commemorate the 478th anniversary of the founding of Cuba. Bordering on flawless, with a fully expressed cameo contrast, the offering represents the only example of its type certified by NGC. From the El Don Diego Luna Collection." The year 1993 saw the release of many NCLT's by the regime featuring the 500th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America. Greeted by disinterest from the world at large, many are now rare. This is listed in Friedberg as a "St. Jacobi" commemorative when it is actually honoring the 478th anniversary of the founding of Santiago de Cuba.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all proofs.

Specification: 31.10 g, 0.999 fine gold, 1.000 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM unlisted, Fr-80.
