This page includes the issues of what is today called the Byzantine Empire, from the time of the sack of Rome to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Altho the Byzantines never called themselves such, considering themselves Romans, we use this name for simplicity. We use the Sear catalog number as that is the most widely known reference in English. Only rarely can a Byzantine coin be dated to a specific year; generally one must give a range based on the emperor's reign.
