Byzantine (790-792) solidus Sear-1591
This specimen was lot 3456 in Sincona sale 3 (Zurich, October 2011), where it sold for 5,000 CHF (about US$6,651 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "CONSTANTINUS VI AND IRENE, 780-797 Mint of Constantinople Solidus 790/792. Obv. COnSTAnTInOS Crowned bust of Constantinus VI in chlamys on l., facing and holding globe cruciger in r. hand. On r., bust of his mother Irene in loros, wearing elaborate crown, holding cross tipped sceptre in her l. hand. Dot in-between. Cross above. Rev. SVn IRI – nI – AVG – MITRI A/A/ Crowned figures of Constantinus V, Leo III and Leo IV seated facing. All wearing chlamys. DOC 2. S. 1591. 4,49 g.
