Byzantine (507-518) solidus Sear-5
The first specimen was lot 3020 in Sincona sale 3 (Zurich, October 2011), where it sold for 750 CHF (about US$998 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ANASTASIUS I, 491-518 Mint of Constantinople Solidus 507/518. Officina D. Obv. D N ANASTA – SIVS PP AVG Helmeted, cuirassed bust ¾ facing. Shield with horseman device on l. shoulder; spear in r. hand over r. shoulder. No device on helmet. Rev. VICTORI – A AVGGG D Victory standing to l. holding long staff surmounted by Staurogram with P inverted to l. Star on l. CONOB in exergue. DOC 5 (officina not listed). MIBE 7. S. 5. 4,48 g. Uncirculated. Ex Auction Lanz Numismatik 132. November 27, 2006. Lot 579."
The second specimen was lot 29278 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $881.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "Anastasius (AD 491-518). AV solidus (21mm, 4.47 gm, 6h). Constantinople, 8th officina, AD 498-518. D N ANASTAS-IVS PP AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Anastasius facing, head slightly right, holding spear over right shoulder and on left arm shield with horseman motif / VICTORI-A AVCCC, Victory standing left, holding jeweled cross; star to left; H//CONOB. Sear 5. DOC 7h. Good Extremely Fine. Ex CNG 72 (14 June 2006), lot 1971."
