Byzantine (604-605) tremissis
This specimen was lot 3198 in Sincona sale 3 (Zurich, October 2011), where it sold for 1,900 CHF (about US$2,528 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "PHOCAS, 602-610 Mint of Ravenna Fractions Tremissis c. 604/605. Regnal year G. Obv. D N FOCAS – PERP AVG G Draped and cuirassed bust, bearded, to r. wearing diadem with cross. Rev. VICTORIA AVGVSTORVN Victory advancing, looking to l. and holding wreath in r. hand and globe cruciger in l. hand. Star in r. field. CONOB below. DOC -. MIB 51d. S. -. 1,47 g. Extremely rare. Perfectly centred. Extremely fine. Ex Auction Numismatica Ars Classica 15 Zurich. May 1999. Lot 582. Astonishingly enough the NAC cataloguer failed to note or describe the letter G at the end of the obverse description. A regnal year on a tremissis of Carthage was then unedited. Professor Hahn has included this coin, of which perhaps only 3 are known, in the new MIBEC."
