Mexico 1848-Do RM real

from the Mountain Groan Collection

Shown is an 1848 one real, one of a type struck at the Durango mint 1832-64. Assayer RM is recorded at this mint for the years 1832-48. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a "bit" (one eighth dollar), is common. The SCWC lists many dates as common but Durango is a scarce mint for one reales. Overdates 1848/31, 1848/33 and 1848/5 (shown here) are noted. The eagle shown is distinctive to the Durango mint and is believed to have originated in Paris.
