Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70196
SB1123-70196r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70196 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Zacatecas. War of Independence. Real, 1811. Ferdinand VII. PCGS VF-20. Type 2 with castles and lions. Variety with open legends on L.V.O. side. A highly original example of this SCARCE type. While central detail on the L.V.O. side is mostly worn away, its outer legends remain intact and legible. The reverse exhibits a solid strike, albeit off-center. Details such as the royal arms and date are entirely clear. With an overall light gray tone, this piece serves as a delightful and wholesome representative for the issue." This type was struck 1810-11 along with KM-183 (local arms/"LVO") and KM-185 (bust obverse). The mounting anarchy unleashed during the War of Independence forced the royal authorities to open branch mints, such as Zacatecas, Guanajuato and Durango. The Zacatecas mint, opened in 1811, closed in 1905.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.896 fine silver.
