SB222-74621r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74621 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1848-C CE. Culiacan Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details. A somewhat crudely struck but well detailed coin. A few surface marks are noted, now obscured by the patchy, dark gray toning." The Culiacan mint struck eight reales 1846-97 and this early date is scarce. Most of the dates after 1855 are common. The Culiacan and Zacatecas were the last branch mints, both closing in 1905.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.3; DP-Cn03.
