Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 637

This specimen was lot 637 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £3,100 (about US$4,801 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Decimal Coinage, 2½ pesos, Alamos mint, 1888 L, mintmark As over Mo, virtually mint state and extremely rare. NGC holder graded MS 62." The Mexico City mint issued a steady series of this denomination 1870-92 and there are a few available dates from Zacatecas but the other mints (Alamos, Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Hermosillo) are all rare or uncollectible. This is the only issue from Alamos.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.23 g, 0.875 fine gold, .119 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 411.
