This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1874-90 at the Alamos mint, which closed in 1895. The SCWC notes varieties with and without dot after the date but prices them the same. The Alamos mint used "A" as a mintmark until 1887, when it was changed to "As." This twenty-five centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. It, in turn, was replaced by a smaller twenty centavos piece in 1898. This specimen was lot 9044 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $149.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Alamos. 25 Centavos, 1880-AL. With dot after date. Lightly toned and very attractive. NGC AU-55."
