This specimen was lot 1289 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $5,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Seville, gold double excelente, Ferdinand-Isabel, assayer •X• at top, mintmark S at bottom between busts, NGC MS 61, ex-McGregor. Well-struck example with sharp, bold, full details including Latin legends, brightly lustrous surfaces despite light die-rust, choice state of preservation for this type. Pedigreed to the McGregor Collection (stated on label)." This type was struck after 1497 at Burgos, Cuenca, Granada, Seville, Toledo and Valencia. The excelente was nominally equal to a ducat. The varieties of this issue comprise Cayón-2922 thru Cayón-2940 with different privy marks (an "X" is shown here) and the mintmark "S".
