Aureo y Calicó sale 423, lot 1353

This specimen was lot 1353 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 7,000 € (about US$9,064 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Catholic Monarchs. Burgos. Double excelente. B between busts. Light hairlines. Very rare. MBC+ [choice very fine]." This type was struck after 1497 at Burgos, Cuenca, Granada, Seville, Toledo and Valencia. The excelente was nominally equal to a ducat. The Burgos product comes marked with a "B". Burgos also struck half excelentes (Fr-148), single excelentes (Fr-133), quadruple excelentes (Fr-124) and castellanos (Fr-138a) but the double excelente is the most available.
