Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 135

This specimen was lot 135 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 1,800 € (about US$2,531 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Catholic Monarchs. Burgos. 4 reales. Gothic letters. The legend begins at 1 o'clock. Flan defect on edge. Very rare. Only one known?. MBC/MBC+ [choice very fine]. Ex Isabel de Trastamara Collection 12/12/2018, no. 135." The Burgos mint struck this four reales in numerous varieties. This one has the value to the left of the shield and an annulet to the right and the yoke to the left of the bundle of six arrows (some have five). According to Numista, this design was used well into the reign of Charles V (r. 1516-56).
