Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73238
SB924-73238r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73238 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Mint Error -- Struck 2% Off Center -- 5 Centavos, 1878-Zs S. Zacatecas Mint. PCGS VF-25. A seldom-seen error, as quality control in Mexican mints during this period was much better than many other mints around the world. From the Sydney F. Martin Collection." Altho this is a low mintage date compared to the issues of the 1890's, it received little premium. Errors from nineteenth century Mexico are rare. Assayer "S" is listed for 1876-86; no silver five centavos were struck in 1882-85 as the regime attempted to circulate a copper-nickel replacement.

Recorded mintage: 60,000.

Specification: 1.35 g, 0.903 fine silver, .039 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-398.10.
