Steve Album sale 54, lot 3234

This specimen was lot 3234 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO: Republic, AR 8 reales, 1878-Ca, assayer AV, toned, VF-XF, ex Bob 'Swamperbob' Gurney Collection. With a specific gravity of 10.395, this piece likely has a gold content of 1% or more." The Chihuahua mint struck eight reales 1831-95. Many of the early dates are rare but most of the later dates, including this one, are fairly common. Other mints for 1878 include Alamos, Culiacan, Durango, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Hermosillo, Mexico City, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas.

Recorded mintage: 439,000.
