This specimen was lot 70240 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2020), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Centavos, 1878-Mo M. Mexico City Mint. NGC AU-58. A lightly toned and handled example, this specimen exhibits fairly clean fields save for a minor flan flaw on the reverse." This specimen is a fairly common date of a series struck 1869-97 at the Mexico City mint. An overdate, 1878/7, is reported but receives no premium. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898.

Specification: 2.707 g, 0.903 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, .078 troy oz ASW, reeded edge.
