Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70382

This specimen was lot 70382 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $480. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1878-Cn JD. Culiacan Mint. NGC MS-63. Boldly struck and lustrous, this handsome example exhibits relatively smooth satiny surfaces with areas of tone amongst the devices and protected areas. A pleasing and wholesome example of the date." The Culiacan mint was opened in 1846 and struck all the silver and gold denominations. The early issues are scarce but become more common after 1855. The 1878-JD is common. Assayer JD is listed for 1878-82. Assayer CG is reported for 1878 along with an 1878/7 overdate. The mint was closed in 1905 and was the last branch mint along with Zacatecas.

Recorded mintage: 483,000 (all varieties).
