Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 51331

This specimen was lot 51331 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1878-Pi MH. Potosi Mint. PCGS MS-63. Fairly RARE when encountered this alluring and enchanting, the present specimen offers a Choice appearance that is devoid of any toning and exhibits a lustrous, light steely gray appearance throughout." In 1873, the Mexican government, facing rejection of its balance scale peso in its main export market of Asia, resumed the production of cap-and-ray eight reales. This late period of 1873-97 saw large mintages and few rarities. This date is somewhat scarce. Assayer MH is listed for 1873-79.
