Mexico 1878-As L 5 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 71066

This specimen was lot 71066 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $9,600. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Mule -- Struck with Gold Peso Obverse -- 5 Centavos, 1878-As L. Alamos Mint. NGC MS-61. Finest example graded and only Mint State. Rare date and very scarce type. Very few Mules exist in high grade. Missing in the Banco de Mexico Collection. This is the only 5 Centavos Alamos Mule graded MS by NGC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." The gold peso obverse die was used for the five centavos at Alamos for 1878-80 and 1886. The Alamos mint was closed in 1895.

Recorded mintage: unknown but the key date.

Specification: 1.35 g, 0.903 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, reeded edge.
