Mexico 1878/7-Do E/P 5 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 71108

This specimen was lot 71108 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Centavos, 1878/7-Do E/P. Durango Mint. NGC MS-63. Finest and only Mint State graded at NGC. Rare date and condition for this one year assayer. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." Shown is an 1878-D^O E five centavos, of a type struck 1874, 1877-81, 1887-94. This issue from Durango is only known with the overdate and is the key to the series.

Recorded mintage: 4,300.

Specification: 1.35 g, 0.903 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, reeded edge.
