This specimen was lot 21085 in Heritage sale 61630 (Dallas, February 2024), where it sold for $181.20. The lot description[1] noted, "Mexico: Republic 8 Reales 1878 Do-PE AU Details (Cleaned) NGC, Durango mint. A most attractive representative that despite the muted surfaces indicative of the assigned cleaning, has pleasingly retoned with a nice cabinet patina." Altho the Durango mint never achieved the mintage totals of Zacatecas or Guanajuato, most of the dates after 1873 are available or common. Of the two assayers for 1878, assayer PE is priced slightly higher than TB. This is the only year known for assayer PE. The Durango mint closed in 1895. Other mints for 1878 include Chihuahua, Culiacan, Alamos, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Hermosillo, Mexico City, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas.

Recorded mintage: 409,000 including assayer TB.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 377.4, DP-Do63.
