Mexico 1878-Pi H 5 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 71195

This specimen was lot 71195 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $336. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Centavos, 1878/7-Pi H. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC Fine Details--Damaged. Only example in NGC Census. Very rare and missing in most collections. Despite noted problems, it is a presentable example. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." The Potosi mint struck this silver five centavos 1869-79, 1886-93. This date is scarce but not rare like the 1869-P^I, 1870-P^I or 1872-P^I. The overdate shown here is not mentioned in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 1.35 g, 0.903 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, reeded edge.
