Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70923

This specimen was lot 70923 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $840. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1878-Zs JS. Zacatecas Mint. NGC MS-64. An appealing near-Gem example, this 8 Reales delivers a rich luster and soft luster throughout." The Zacatecas mint is tied with Guanajuato as the most prolific mint during the Republic and most of the eight reales struck 1825-97 are common, as is this one. Assayer JS served 1876-86. No varieties are reported in the SCWC for the year.
