Shown is a balance scale fifty centavos, of a type struck 1869-1895. This issue from Culiacan is a slightly scarce date for the mint. The SCWC lists an overmintmark, Cn/Mo, as scarce. Assayer D is also noted for the year. Like most fifty centavos, high grade specimens are extremely rare. This specimen was lot 9153 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $258.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Culiacan. 50 Centavos, 1878-CnG. Small dig in obverse field. Nice strike, lightly toned. NGC AU-55.”
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .393 troy oz ASW.
Recorded mintage: 18,000 (assayers G and D).
